International Labour's Day

1st May
International Labour/Worker's Day

  •           The first day of May is observed as International Labor Day, honoring laborers everywhere. On this day, we honor laborers and workers and march for their rights in opposition to exploitation. It came about as a result of the eight-hour labor union campaign.

In the US, this day began as a union campaign in the late 1800s. Following the adoption of a resolution by the Marxist International Socialist Congress, which demanded that workers not be forced to work more than eight hours, it became an occasion and is still observed on May 1 as Labour Day. It respects people's efforts and recognizes their accomplishments everywhere. The first May Day was observed in 1890. The International Congress of Socialist Parties in Europe proclaimed May 1 as a "workers day of international unity and solidarity for workers in Paris" on July 14, 1988.

In India, the inaugural Labour Day was observed in Chennai in 1923. It was also in India at same time

when the red flag was first utilized. The communist leader Malayapuram Singhavelu Chettinar requested that this day be recognized as a national holiday, a request that was echoed by the Labour-Kisan Party of Hindustan on this day. This was carried out as a metaphor for taking laborers' and workers' efforts into consideration. Other names for this day in India include Antrarashtriya Shramik Divas, Kamgar Din, and Kamgar Divas.

In the United States and Canada, Labor Day falls on the first Monday in September.

AMBEDKAR JAYANTI, 2024

133TH BIRTH ANNIVERSARY

On April 14, 1891, Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar was born at Mhow Cantonment, where his father was an Army officer. The caste that Dr. B. R. Ambedkar was born into was regarded as the lowest of the low. However, it was this individual who drafted the nation's Constitution. His life was filled with hardships since the Upper Castes openly opposed his extreme suggestions for ending the Caste System. The legendary doctor not only defied all societal and institutional expectations to pursue his education, but he also astonishingly graduated with a doctorate in economics from Columbia University in 1917. The young man who endured severe caste humiliation went on to become the nation's first Minister of Law and drafted the Constitution for free India.

We may recognize Dr. Ambedkar's challenge to the status quo in his fight against Brahmanical Patriarchy, his bold suggestions for the Hindu Code Bill, and his recommendations for a radical reconstruction of property relations. Perhaps the most radical thinker in India, Dr. Ambedkar changed the social and political climate in the fight against British Colonialism by raising the consciousness of the oppressed of their own plight. Ambedkar is credited with telling the Dalits to "Educate, Agitate, and Organise," a statement that still has great significance today

 (14th April, 1891 – 6th December, 1956)

Inspirational Quotes By BR Ambedkar

  • Political tyranny is nothing compared to social tyranny and a reformer, who defies society is a more courageous man than a politician who defies government.
  • I measure the progress of a community by the degree of progress which women have achieved.
  • I like the religion that teaches liberty, equality and fraternity.
  • If you believe in living a respectable life, you believe in self-help which is the best help.
  • Cultivation of mind should be the ultimate aim of human existence.
  • Men are mortal. So are ideas. An idea needs propagation as much as a plant needs watering otherwise both will wither and die.
  • We must stand on our own feet and fight as best as we can for our rights. So carry on your agitation and organize your forces. Power and prestige will come to you through struggle.
  • So long as you do not achieve social liberty, whatever freedom is provided by the law is of no avail to you.
